Black flag scuppers Seth’s chances of success at Lydd
A black flag and another disappointing A-Final meant that Seth left Lydd having gained very few points, but crucially still third in the championship. It was an eventful day, on the now anti-clockwise circuit, and although his final was far from impressive, Seth’s results in the heats were encouraging.

Overtaking was always hard at Lydd Raceway, but with the track reversed it was almost impossible to pass anyone. With heats containing 20 drivers it was always going to be difficult to get a good set of results. For his first heat Seth started sixth. He decided not to cut to the inside for the first corner, and this paid dividends leaving him in third by turn three. He then picked of second easily but found it harder to take the lead. He eventually got passed at about half distance, and pulled out a huge gap to take an easy win.

Seth’s second heat was more eventful to say the least. Starting 17th he would be hard pressed to get many points but he tried nonetheless. He tagged on to the back of Lee Kemp as they tried to fight through the field but two incidents with other drivers led to Seth being disqualified; ‘I wouldn’t say that either of those accidents were my fault. We were all running nose to tail, so if one person braked too early we all ran into the back of each other. It’s annoying because a black flag means no points at all whereas I would have still got 8 for finishing last!’ Seth did not dwell on this disappointment and instead focused on his final heat. This was his best grid position, and he hoped to do well from p5. He got a good start and with a little help from his father managed to take 3rd by the end of lap 1. He then joined the leaders, Guy Holiday and Dan Gore and they started to pull away. Unfortunately Seth had kart problems and he started to drop back; ‘The air box was really loose and it kept slipping onto my leg. Because of this every time I came out of a corner the engine would be choking and I’d lose all of the revs.’ It was clear that Seth had settled for third place but just two laps from the end Dan Gore made an uncharacteristic mistake and spun from the lead. Seth, therefore, finished second behind championship rival Guy Holiday.

Because of the unfortunate black flag, Seth lined up 19th on the grid for the A-final. His performance in the final was remarkably to that at Rye House; ‘The kart felt fine in practice, but as soon as the race started I could see it had no bottom end. Unfortunately it didn’t have any top end either and I was lapping 7 tenths slower than I did in the first heat of the day! It’s a pity that the karts have such a difference in performance already, but everyone is in the same boat. Importantly I’m still third in the championship, and there is a long way to go.’
