Round two of the Club 100 sprint championship was held in glorious conditions at Rye House on the 20th April and Seth’s day was tarnished only by a relatively disappointing result in the A-final.
With a huge number of drivers entering the event, their were grids of 19 for the heats. For the first heat Seth started 8th with high hopes for the race. He was typically good in the first corner and was 4th by the end of the first lap. He then joined a trio with Tim Gibson and Andrew Osbourne, and they easily passed Loic Ditchburn to take 1st, 2nd, 3rd. Seth tried to improve his position in the final laps but had to keep an eye on Ginetta racer Joshua Hill who finished fourth, just half a second behind.
For his next heat, Seth was a long way back on grid and feared getting caught up in an accident. This however didn’t manage to suppress his first lap confidence, and by the end of the lap he had made up no less than eight positions. He then made two more places before entering into a battle with Mark Atkinson. The pair fought cleanly, with Seth passing him on the final corner of the final lap to finish 6th, just three behind his speedy father.
For the final heat Seth had his best grid position of fifth. He and Eddie Hall managed to hunt down the leader, Aaron Stapleton. Eddie managed to slip past but Seth’s attempts were constantly foiled by yellow flags meaning that he finished a comfortable third.
These results placed him well up the A-final grid in p5. Unfortunately his reward was a disappointing finish in tenth position.
‘I could feel that the kart wasn’t great as soon as I left the pit-lane, but I thought that it was just cold. I had made some bad kart changes last season so decided to hope for the best and keep the kart. It turned out to be a terrible mistake that would leave me lapping half a second slower than I had been in the first heat of the day! Although I managed to take third in the first corner, the kart had no top or bottom end power, and was pretty lairy in the corners as well. It was inevitable that I would not be able to keep third and soon the floodgates opened leaving me tenth.’
‘I am incredibly disappointed about the result, but my performance in the heats was encouraging. I will just brush myself off and start to think about the race at Lydd in two weeks time. At least I’m third in the championship.’
