Heavy and persistent rain at Dorset's Clay Pigeon Raceway ruined round 5 of the Club100 Lightweight Sprint Championship on 27 May, leaving Seth wet, cold and dejected. Though he has a good record at Clay, winning there last summer in F6, he struggled all day to master the art of driving in the rain on slick tyres - a Club100 speciality of which he has little experience.
Having spun out of two of his three heats Seth wasn't surprised to find himself starting near the back of the B final. Former world champion Damon Hill helped push him out for the race, but that didn't change his luck and he suffered yet another incident on the opening lap, trailing down to the back of the field at the start of lap 2.
He then began a charge back from 20th position, and, with nothing to lose, for the first time showed real speed and confidence in the appalling conditions. By the final lap he was up to a brilliant 7th place, though his race was then ruined by Andrew Osbourne who made a mad lunge into the righthander after Billy's and punted Seth off. Osbourne apologised but the damage was done..
"A terrible day but I finally got my act together in the last race and I think I know how to drive on slicks in the wet now. I've been used to the brilliant Vega wet tyres we had in F6 so slicks were quite a shock at first! Anyway, luckily a lot of my rivals also had bad days today and I've only slipped 2 places to 11th in the championship - not bad in a field of 45 regulars. And Dad keeps telling me that I'm only (nearly)15 so I can't expect too much. But I know I can get onto the podium before the year's out. 6 more rounds to go so I've still got 6 chances to do it..." |
